4/5 RANGERS, commanded by Lt Col R N Kendell MBE RTR, attended Annual Camp, Exercise LION SUN, at Bloodhound Camp, Episkopi UK Sovereign Base, Cyprus for two 2-week periods of Camp during 1-30 September 1996. Ex LION SUN was the UK title for a battalion sized group deploying to a training area camp on a UK sovereign base in Cyprus.
4/5 RANGERS, commanded by Lt Col J W Rollins MBE R IRISH, attended Annual Camp at STANTA (Stanford Training Area), near Thetford, Norfolk for 17 days during August 1998.
The first week included a series of range practices culminating in live-firing where background activities included key skills training in section and platoon attacks, patrolling, ambush drills, water obstacle crossing and Operations in Built Up Areas (OBUA). Training cadres were also conducted for potential and young officers, recruits phase 1, and assault pioneers.
On Thursday 1 April 1993, the regimental flag of The Royal Irish Rangers was hoisted at the front of the Battalion Headquarters building in Charles Street, Portadown and the 4th/5th Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers (4/5 RANGERS), commanded by Lieutenant Colonel E Glover R IRISH, joined the Army Order of Battle.
On 8 July 1998 The Secretary of State for Defence, The Rt. Hon. George Robinson MP, presented to Parliament the White Paper titled 'Strategic Defence Review' (SDR) which included the future of the reserves.
The 5th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel M A Lowry R IRISH, attended Annual Camp, by participating in Exercise PLAIN SAILING, from 23 September - 8 October 1989. The aim of the exercise was to practice the Battalion's war role. In all, over 400 personnel were deployed including 57 reservists and the band.
The 5th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers relocated Battalion Headquarters from the Armagh Territorial Army (TA) Centre to the new build Hydebank TA Centre, Belfast on Waterloo Day, the 18 June. The relocation also included D Company.
The TA Centre Hydebank was declared open by The Colonel-in-Chief The Royal Irish Rangers, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester, during an official visit to the Battalion on 7 November 1990.
Three soldiers of the 5th (County Londonderry) Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment died and eight others were injured as a fire engulfed their accommodation block in Magherafelt base in the early hours of the morning.
