4th/5th Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers Annual Camp 1998, England.
4/5 RANGERS, commanded by Lt Col J W Rollins MBE R IRISH, attended Annual Camp at STANTA (Stanford Training Area), near Thetford, Norfolk for 17 days during August 1998.
The first week included a series of range practices culminating in live-firing where background activities included key skills training in section and platoon attacks, patrolling, ambush drills, water obstacle crossing and Operations in Built Up Areas (OBUA). Training cadres were also conducted for potential and young officers, recruits phase 1, and assault pioneers.
The second week culminated in a four day exercise during which two full strength companies, supported by a centralised A1 Echelon, the Assault Pioneers and the Machine Gun Platoon, conducted a series of set piece offensive operations. The exercise culminated in a formal attack on the STANTA OBUA village. In summary, the aim of Camp 1998 was to prepare 4/5 RANGERS for the Battle Group exercise during Annual Camp 1999 in the Ukraine.
