Soldier of 83rd Regiment at Talavera
The 'Soldier's Companion', a collection of biography, anecdotes and poetry, printed in 1824, included the following anecdote of a soldier of the 83rd Regiment:
'At the battle of Talavera, a private of the 83rd Regiment, whose arm had been broken in the conflict, perceived one of the enemy's marksmen, who had ascended a tree, taking deliberate aim at a British officer. The soldier, disabled by his wound from using his musket, instantaneously drew his bayonet, which he threw with such excellent aim, that the point entered the jugular vein of the rifleman, perforated his throat, and killed him on the spot.'
