IRA Landmine attack on 3 UDR.

Sunday, 6 January, 1980

UDR Cap Badge Private Richard Wilson, Private Roy Smith and Private James Cochrane were killed in an IRA attack near Castlewellan, County Down.

The device at Burrenbridge contained one ton of explosive material and was triggered by a command wire from a derelict house 250 yards away. The first Land Rover in the two-vehicle patrol, from the 3rd Battalion The Ulster Defence Regiment, took the force of the blast. The second Land Rover was unable to stop and drove into the crater that measured 13 feet deep and 30 feet across. Four other soldiers from 3 UDR were wounded in the attack.
