2nd Inniskillings on Monte Damiano, Italy.

INNISKSThe 2nd Battalion The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, having had seven days rest, returned to the battlefront on Monte Damiano on 10 February 1944 and was in trenches on 17 February.

The enemy still held the summit of the mountain and between his defences and the Inniskillings, a stone wall represented the 'boundary'. Frequent patrolling took place on this desolate hillside and the Battalion was not very comfortable. The forward companies in their muddy trenches were huddled close to the German line. Owing to the vigilance and skill of the enemy artillery observer, any movement during daylight was unwise.

The Inniskillings did what they could to make their position a little more secure and a little more habitable; sand bags and duckboards became very valuable items. Supply of all commodities was a constant problem: each night a party of 100 porters and 30 mules, which had little spare carrying capacity for other than basic essentials, brought up the Battalion's supplies from the valley below. The Battalion was relieved on 22 February 1944.
