During The War of 1812, and following their success at the Battle of Crysler's Farm, the 2/89th continued the Niagara campaign with the British force led by Lieutenant General Gordon Drummond. The Americans were surprised when the British force continued the Niagara campaign despite their small numbers and the onset of winter.
Drummond's force, including the 2/89th Regiment, attacked and reoccupied Fort George, albeit from an inferior enemy force, and then crossed the Niagara River and captured Fort Niagara on 19 December 1813. On the same day, men from the 2/89th Light Company accompanied another force, which continued to raid south in the direction of the United States settlements of Buffalo and Black Rock. Operations would continue through the winter of 1814-15.
